Can you recommend an Advocate for me?
The Isle of Man Law Society cannot recommend individual Advocates or Practices. Instead, we direct you to our search function where you can search by name and legal specialities.
What do Advocates Charge?
Each Firm will have different rates depending on the type of work involved. The Isle of Man Law Society does not have record of this information, so we recommend you speak to Firms directly. Advocates will provide you with details rates and may, in some circumstances
What if I can’t find a Manx Advocate?
If you are not able to find a Manx Advocate to act for you, you may (in limited circumstances) be able to obtain a Temporary Advocates Licence for a barrister from England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland to represent you. This process if administered by the Courts. Further details about when you may be able to do this and how you can make an Application can be found HERE.
How do I find an Advocate who can undertake Legal Aid work?
Use our search function and select ‘Legal Aid Panel’ under ‘Responsibilities’.
Why must I instruct a Manx Advocate?
There are a number of areas of Manx Law that can only be dealt with by Manx Advocates such as Litigation, Probate and Conveyancing*. If you are dealing with a matter of Manx law, a Manx Advocate will be specifically qualified to advise and assist you. The law in the Isle of Man is different to the law in other jurisdictions and therefore lawyers who are not qualified in the Isle of Man may not have the necessary expertise or experience to assist you in the best and most effective way.
*Conveyancers are not necessarily qualified Manx Advocates, however are ‘Form 2’ must be signed by an Advocate.
